Andre Durain said, “a painting made outdoors is a sacred event.” But there are obvious difficulties for some people in painting “en plein aire.” Using photographic references can help but they are only a tool; a first step in the creative process, not something to be simply copied. Join Don Cavin, as he leads a Master Class on how to impose one’s own knowledge, experience, intuition and “gut-feelings” on a photograph in order to render it useful in creating art. Visit Don’s website to see why this truly is a ‘master class.’

This course is designed to help landscape painter’s move towards a less traditional way of depicting the landscape. The students will focus on understanding and defining their position along the spectrum of abstraction. They will define abstraction from within themselves and make it a personal journey. Approaches and tools of abstraction such as elimination, simplification, exaggeration, colour reversal, texturing and others will be discussed. Traditional landscape elements such as water, trees, colours, land formations, man made features, angles and others will be investigated to discover and emphasize their potential for abstraction.
