The Luminaries – 2014 Man-Booker Prize

luminaries “Sometimes – rarely – a novel arrives that is so good all you can do is shake your head in wonder. Brilliant in design, masterful in execution, and intensely pleasurable to inhabit, The Luminaries is a masterpiece, the work of a writer of apparently limitless range and talent.” —Peter Hobbs, author of In the Orchard, the Swallows

all my puny
Blue Heron books pic The unpretentious atmosphere of Blue Heron Books with its comfy chairs, wood shelving and creaky floors lends itself to a long slow, browsing session, but under that sleepy atmosphere vibrates a strong pulse. The store has a quaint, old-fashioned look with an up tempo vibe, because there is always something happening. The store is a hub for the community and a bastion of calm chaos where everyone is welcome, even the local dogs that drop by with their owners for a treat from the tin kept under the front counter. 62 Brock St. W., Uxbridge, Ontario. 905-852-4282

Blue Heron Books is a wonderful book store. Hardwood floors, comfy chairs and the best book selection you could ask for. Shelley and her wonderful staff know every book in the place, and can help you find exactly what you’re looking for–even if you don’t know what it is yet. Blue Heron is one of my favourite places to visit. — Erin Thomas

Painting from Photos – 2 Day Master Class with Don Cavin

Andre Durain said, “a painting made outdoors is a sacred event.” But there are obvious difficulties for some people in painting “en plein aire.” Using photographic references can help but they are only a tool; a first step in the creative process, not something to be simply copied. Join Don Cavin, as he leads a Master Class on how to impose one’s own knowledge, experience, intuition and “gut-feelings” on a photograph in order to render it useful in creating art. Visit Don’s website to see why this truly is a ‘master class.’

www.cavinart.com. This is Don’s last class for 2015.

Saturday March 28th & Sunday March 29th, 10am to 4pm  $195

ABSTRACTING THE LANDSCAPE IN WATERCOLOUR OR ACRYLIC

This course is designed to help landscape painter’s move towards a less traditional way of depicting the landscape. The students will focus on understanding and defining their position along the spectrum of abstraction. They will define abstraction from within themselves and make it a personal journey. Approaches and tools of abstraction such as elimination, simplification, exaggeration, colour reversal, texturing and others will be discussed. Traditional landscape elements such as water, trees, colours, land formations, man made features, angles and others will be investigated to discover and emphasize their potential for abstraction. Painting demonstrations combined with one on one mentoring sessions will be followed by a group discussion addressing common successes and struggles.
