us conductors “DZEEEEOOOoo! Just as hard as it is to make a theremin sing so it is hard to pull off a novel like this. But Sean Michaels does it. Us Conductors bridges body and soul, science and art, and like theremin music, it’s of this world and magical at the same time.” —Ismet Prcic, author of Shards
Blue Heron books pic The unpretentious atmosphere of Blue Heron Books with its comfy chairs, wood shelving and creaky floors lends itself to a long slow, browsing session, but under that sleepy atmosphere vibrates a strong pulse. The store has a quaint, old-fashioned look with an up tempo vibe, because there is always something happening. The store is a hub for the community and a bastion of calm chaos where everyone is welcome, even the local dogs that drop by with their owners for a treat from the tin kept under the front counter. 62 Brock St. W., Uxbridge, Ontario. 905-852-4282

Painting from Photos – 2 Day Master Class with Don Cavin

Don Cavin 2 Day Workshop

Andre Durain said, “a painting made outdoors is a sacred event.” But there are obvious difficulties for some people in painting “en plein aire.” Using photographic references can help but they are only a tool; a first step in the creative process, not something to be simply copied. Join Don Cavin, as he leads a Master Class on how to impose one’s own knowledge, experience, intuition and “gut-feelings” on a photograph in order to render it useful in creating art. Visit Don’s website to see why this truly is a ‘master class.’

www.cavinart.com. This is Don’s last class for 2015.

A MOSAIC APPROACH TO PAINTING ACRYLIC LANDSCAPES with Marc Gagnon

Marc Gagnon - Mosaic Acrylic

Students will explore how to create dynamic semi-abstract interpretations of the rural landscape exhibiting bold shapes and values defined by subtle colour shifts and various sized mosaic like brush strokes. The mosaic approach will focus the students attention on creating their paintings in a simple and direct manner. Unity and colour dominance will be achieved via a limited colour palette.

Saturday, March 14th, 10am to 4pm $95

ABSTRACTING THE LANDSCAPE IN WATERCOLOUR OR ACRYLIC

Marc Gagnon - Mosaic AcrylicThis course is designed to help landscape painter’s move towards a less traditional way of depicting the landscape. The students will focus on understanding and defining their position along the spectrum of abstraction. They will define abstraction from within themselves and make it a personal journey. Approaches and tools of abstraction such as elimination, simplification, exaggeration, colour reversal, texturing and others will be discussed. Traditional landscape elements such as water, trees, colours, land formations, man made features, angles and others will be investigated to discover and emphasize their potential for abstraction. Painting demonstrations combined with one on one mentoring sessions will be followed by a group discussion addressing common successes and struggles.

Sunday, February 22nd, 10am to 4pm $95
