Blue Heron Books is a wonderful book store. Hardwood floors, comfy chairs and the best book selection you could ask for. Shelley and her wonderful staff know every book in the place, and can help you find exactly what you’re looking for–even if you don’t know what it is yet. Blue Heron is one of my favourite places to visit. —

“When I begin to write, I open myself and wait. And when I turn toward an inner spiritual awareness, I open myself and wait.” With that insight, Pat Schneider invites readers to contemplate their lives and deepest questions through writing. How the Light Gets In gracefully encourages readers to consider writing as a spiritual practice.

WCDR member Heather Tucker has won the New York Literal Latte short prose contest. Heather thanks her Writing In Progress writing group, past and present, for their critiquing insights and James Dewar & Sue Reynolds for the workshop where the seed for the story was planted.
Blue Heron Instructors Sue Reynolds and James Dewar are no strangers to grateful students, however. One of their students from their year-long A Novel Approach course just signed a two novel deal with Simon & Schuster with the novel she drafted in that class. Furthermore for the last two years both winners of the $1000 WCDR Short Story contest have been students of Sue’s, and the most recent winning story was begun at one of Sue’s Writers’ Sanctuary Sundays.
Finally, Sue just returned from a week in Chicago where she was the co-trainer for a group of 10 new AWA writing group facilitators. AWA (or Amherst Writers) is renowned for helping writers discover and foster their own unique voices without damage to creativity or a writers’ artistic self-esteem.
Check out the writing classes Sue is teaching in the Studio this fall.
Clarification: The $100 or $150 fee is for 6 of the 8 sessions offered; not per session. At time of registration participants choose which 6 sessions they would like to attend. This program is designed to offer flexibility to today’s busy families.
Know enough to make the world of your novel come alive,
whether it is Georgian Bay in the ‘50’s, Edo, Japan in 1800 or
the Labrador coast in 1830. Katherine will share her secrets on
using images, written accounts, experts, museums and the
internet to learn your way around that imagined place and time.
Then learn to let the research go and write.
