The Luminaries – 2014 Man-Booker Prize

luminaries “Sometimes – rarely – a novel arrives that is so good all you can do is shake your head in wonder. Brilliant in design, masterful in execution, and intensely pleasurable to inhabit, The Luminaries is a masterpiece, the work of a writer of apparently limitless range and talent.” —Peter Hobbs, author of In the Orchard, the Swallows

all my puny
Blue Heron books pic The unpretentious atmosphere of Blue Heron Books with its comfy chairs, wood shelving and creaky floors lends itself to a long slow, browsing session, but under that sleepy atmosphere vibrates a strong pulse. The store has a quaint, old-fashioned look with an up tempo vibe, because there is always something happening. The store is a hub for the community and a bastion of calm chaos where everyone is welcome, even the local dogs that drop by with their owners for a treat from the tin kept under the front counter. 62 Brock St. W., Uxbridge, Ontario. 905-852-4282

Blue Heron Books is on my map. How could you fail in the book business with a name like Shelley Macbeth? She runs great events and never disappoints with hundreds in attendance. She knows each of her customers and their tastes. Shelley is that great combination of woman of letters and an entrepreneur. Her staff loves books and thrive on recommendations. — Cathy Gildiner

  • Hello, Blue Heron -
Your customers and local book clubs may be interested to know that a play called “After Mrs. Rochester”, based on the life of author Jean Rhys (who wrote an acclaimed prequel to “Jane Eyre” titled “Wide Sargasso Sea”) gets its Canadian premiere at Toronto’s Alumnae Theatre, Sept 23 – Oct 7.
Read all about it at http://alumnaetheatre.com/1112after.html.
Alumnae Theatre is located at the corner of Berkeley & Adelaide Streets in Toronto.
Tickets range from Pay-What-You-Can (Sunday matinees) to a very affordable $20. Cash only at the door. Reserve seats by phone (416-364-4170, box 1) or e-mail (reservations@alumnaetheatre.com).
There is a paid parking lot two blocks south on Berkeley, just south of Front Street, opposite Canadian Stage.
Dining suggestions nearby: Skal Rockbar (good food, reasonable prices) on Adelaide, across from the theatre) or Betty’s (King Street east of Sherbourne).

We recently enjoyed a visit to your store on our vacation from San Diego, California. Can you help us with a title? We are looking for a fiction or mystery book with the Canadian pipeline as the setting/ background. Thank you!

We loved your store, town, and the hike that you recommended, located by Walmart.

I looked up that artist in Spain; she has multiple installations of that type, all hollow on the inside.
The video above is from the London 2012 Olympics – a maze built of books in the pattern of a fingerprint. You’ll like it Shelley.

New book announcement – Your Soul’s Gift

    To the Owner/Manager,

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Robert Schwartz, and I am the author of the new spirituality book Your Soul’s Gift: The Healing Power of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born (ISBN 9780977679461), which was published in March. My intention in this book (as well as my first book, Your Soul’s Plan: Discovering the Real Meaning of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born), is to help people see the deeper meaning and purpose their life challenges, emerge from victim consciousness, and heal. Both books are are available from New Leaf, Ingram, Baker & Taylor, and DeVorss.

May I ask if you would consider offering one or both books in your store?

If you do decide to carry the new book, I would be honored if you would consider featuring it in your newsletter. The cover image is available on Amazon, or I can send a high res jpg to you.

To give you more information about my new book, I’ve copied some descriptive text below.

Also copied below is an article I wrote about the new book. You are welcome to use this article in your newsletter to promote the book.

I invite you to sign up for my email newsletter on the first page of my web site.

Thank you for your kind consideration.

    With love,

    Robert Schwartz
    http://www.yoursoulsplan.com

In his groundbreaking first book, Your Soul’s Plan, Robert Schwartz brought the idea of pre-birth planning into the mainstream.

Now, his brilliant sequel Your Soul’s Gift: The Healing Power of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born delves even deeper by exploring the pre-birth planning of spiritual awakening, miscarriage and abortion, caregiving, abusive relationships, sexuality, incest, adoption, poverty, suicide, rape, and mental illness. There’s also a chapter about the pre-birth planning we do with our future pets. Working with a team of gifted mediums, Schwartz brings forth great love and wisdom from the other side to explain why such experiences are planned and the deep, soul-level healing they can create.

Through the stories in Your Soul s Gift you can:

 Develop greater self-love as you become aware of the tremendous courage it takes for you to plan a life on Earth and to live the life you planned

 Emerge from victim consciousness to know yourself as the powerful creator of your life

 Forgive those who have hurt you and create a lasting inner peace

    About The Author
In a personal session with a medium in 2003, author Robert Schwartz was astonished to speak with nonphysical beings who knew everything about him – not just what he had done in life, but also what he had thought and felt. They told him that he had planned many of his most difficult experiences before he was born. Realizing that knowledge of pre-birth planning would bring great healing to people and allow them to understand the deeper purpose of their life challenges, he decided to devote his life to the study of pre-birth planning. The extraordinary insights that have emerged from his work speak to our heartfelt, universal yearning to know . . . why.

Robert Schwartz is a certified hypnotherapist who offers spiritual guidance and hypnotherapeutic regressions to help people understand their life plan. For more information please visit him online at http://www.yoursoulsplan.com.

I was just wondering if you had any services or recommendations about maybe boosting sales? I am currently working on the second and third of the series and am always able to discuss things further if you wish!

Thank you for your time, and have a good day!

  • Paul says:

    Dear Sir/Madam

Please see attached a description for a book I wrote and published.

Its called :ARCTIC by Paul E. Casey. Spinetinglers Publishing. ISBN: 978-1-906755-31-7

This book would be an excellent item to sell in store’s, gallery’s, gift shops and museums catering to gifts, tourism, travel and Canadian Military related items. It has many interesting photographs taken throughout Canada’s Arctic region including Inuvik, Yellow Knife, Cambridge Bay, Jenny Lind Island, Hall Beach, Iqaluit , Cape Dyer, Pangnirtung, Goose Bay and more. I worked as a Safety Officer on the North Warning System and spent considerable time in the region taking pictures of the landscape, wildlife, wildflowers and plantlife, old DEW Line equipment and the the towns that I visited. There is also a history of the DEW Line and pictures of aircraft, defense missiles and radar equipment from the Cold War era. The aircraft pictured in the book are on display in various locations throughout Canada and were part of our Air Force through this period.

The book is signed up to the Ingram catalogue, which allows book stores to purchase the book at a discounted price. I’m not sure that museums would have access to this, so there’s no issue with the publisher ordering copies for them. If this occurs you can contact Lauren Neil , e-mail: lauren@spinetinglers.co.uk at Spinetinglers Publishing and she can arrange payment and order the books. As well, it is available at retail on Amazon.com and

    Indigo.ca

  • Brian Smith says:

Hello: My name is Brian Robert Smith, and I’m from Oshawa, Ontario. I’ve recently published my debut novel “Purified” with 323 Books. In the interest of making it more available in Southern Ontario, I’m wondering if Blue Heron Books has programs that support new and local authors.

Purified is currently available on all eBook platforms; and as paperback and hardback at Amazon.com, BarnesAndNobel.com, and Amazon.ca. It is available in the Ingram Catalogue (ipage – ISBN – 9780992048334 and 9780992048341) and directly from 323 Books. It currently has a 4.3 average review rating on Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GZDJNWC) and 4.4 on Amazon.ca (http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00GZDJNWC?*Version*=1&*entries*=0).

Please inform me of programs available that will allow me the opportunity to stock this novel in your store.

Thank you for your time. I look forward to your response.

I have been trying to source a book here in Australia called “Beyond Belfast” by Canadian author Will Ferguson. For some reason no-one seems to be able or willing to source it here! In a Google search, your site came up as having had the book, at least at some point in the recent past. Would you be willing/able to ship to Australia if you have it if I were to pay by Mastercard?
    many thanks
